Individual Life Experience Committee Research - An Update

Members of the ILEC will provide an update on the latest research sponsored by the committee. This research will include updates on the latest mortality and lapse experience study research, reviews of various analytical approaches that the committee is exploring, as well as a discussion of the committee's plans for future research.

At the conclusion of the webcast, attendees will be able to: Understand some of the latest experience study results developed by the committee, use some new analytical techniques for exploring the ILEC data, and know what future research the committee has underway or is considering undertaking.

Tony R. Phipps, FSA, MAAA (Moderator)

Actuarial Director, State Farm Life Insurance Co

Tony Phipps, FSA, MAAA graduated from Minot State University in 1989 with a degree in mathematics. Tony’s entire career has been with State Farm Life Insurance Company. During his years at State Farm, he has gained experience in life pricing/product development, life valuation, individual health valuation and pricing. Current responsibilities include experience studies and assumptions, mortality/underwriting research, and life insurance company and product taxation. Tony is an active volunteer with industry work, participating in various projects with the SOA. He is currently a member of the Research Executive Committee, and Chair of the Individual Life Experience Committee.

Philip Lance Adams, FSA, CERA, MAAA

AVP and Actuary, Munich Re

Philip is assistant vice president and actuary on the Biometrics Research team at Munich Re, where he researches emerging underwriting tools and their applications to underwriting and pricing. Prior to rejoining Munich Re, he spent four years as chief actuary of a small life and health carrier. For the Society, he has contributed to the development of the 2015 VBT and Pub2010 mortality tables. He holds Masters degrees in Mathematics and in statistics from Tulane University in New Orleans. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA), and Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA).

David B. Atkinson, FSA

President, DB Atkinson Consulting

After graduating from Caltech with honors, David began his career at Occidental Life Insurance Company in Los Angeles. After earning his FSA, he briefly worked for a software company before becoming VP and Chief Actuary for Atlas Life Insurance Company in Tulsa. From there he moved to St. Louis to work for the Reinsurance Division of General American Life Insurance Company. After leading the effort to spin off the Reinsurance Division as a new public company, Reinsurance Group of America (RGA), David briefly served as Chief Financial Officer before becoming Chief Operating Officer. David also served as President, CEO and Chairman of RGA's U.S. and offshore subsidiaries. He retired from RGA in 2014 and began a consulting business, specializing in life insurance and reinsurance. David has written study notes and co-authored a book for the SOA and has been a strong supporter of the American Heart Association for many years.

Kevin P. Larsen, ASA, MAAA

Actuary, Mortality Development, Symetra

Kevin Larsen is currently Actuary, Mortality Development for Symetra. He has worn many hats in the life reinsurance practice, including pricing, financial modeling, product development, and since 2003, research and experience studies. Outside of his professional activities, Kevin has performed in several musicals, and he plays French Horn in several ensembles. Stages he has enjoyed include The Lincoln Center in New York City, The Kennedy Center in Washington, Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, and Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin. Married to an actuary since 1987, Kevin is also father of three daughters: an actuary, a forensic scientist, and a future nurse. He also has a toddler granddaughter who already exhibits signs of being able to do anything she wishes.
