Modeling techniques: PBR and Beyond
The optional phase-in period for life principle-based reserves (PBR) has come to a close, and companies have put in the work to bring their PBR implementations across the finish line. With the mandatory PBR implementation deadline behind them, companies can turn their attention from compliance to model and process improvements. The presenters will outline lessons learned from PBR implementations and their applications to broader use cases, as well as resources that are available for PBR modelers. Discussion topics will include items such as: Model simplifications and validation Model run-time techniques Model scalability (e.g. adding new products / future assumption updates) Sensitivity testing Model projections Available PBR & other modeling resources (e.g. PBR practice note, ASOP 56)

Bill Cember is a Vice President at Prudential where he leads the model development on annuity products. In prior roles at Prudential, Bill led the model development for Life PBR and served as a developer on the conversion of Prudential's life projections over to AXIS. Prior to Prudential, he worked in a variety of roles within industry, consulting, as well as at a large global macro hedge fund. Bill is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

Reanna Nicholsen is an Associate in the Institutional Markets business at Global Atlantic, working primarily in block reinsurance. Reanna previously was a Corporate Vice President & Actuary for New York Life Insurance Company, responsible for the implementation of Principle-Based Reserving, and had previous roles in Financial Risk Management and Individual Annuity Product Pricing. She is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).
