Actuarial Innovation and Technology - Update on Recent Research

We will highlight some recent research papers published by the Actuarial Innovation and Technology Committee, including white papers on electronic health records, and epigenetics and underwriting. Participants will learn about some of the the latest innovations in actuarial work and get a preview of future research that the committee is planning.

Mervyn Kopinsky, FSA,EA,MAAA (Moderator)

Experience Studies Actuary

Mervyn Kopinsky has almost 30 years experience working as a consulting pension actuary. Mervyn joined the Society of Actuaries in 2017 in a research position as an Experience Studies actuary. Mervyn is also currently involved in researching the application of Predictive Modeling techniques to large data sets and coordinates the Society's Actuarial Innovation and Technology research track. Mervyn is originally from South Africa where he graduated with an MSc. in statistics.

James Timmins

Jim Timmins, principal at Breakthrough Development LLC, is a genomics and DNA therapy expert with 30 years of experience at large and small biopharma and chemical companies. After a stellar scientific career in pharma capped by an MBA from MIT’s Sloan School, he has dedicated his career to deciphering biotech opportunities for Fortune 50 boards and large US nonprofits, resulting in launch of nearly a dozen biotech ventures. His most recent assignment was Health Sciences Business Officer for the State of Nevada, where he launched 2 genomics ventures and assisted with two others. In addition to managing a DNA testing venture, Helix Diagnostics, and planning genomics service laboratories for underserved US metropolitan areas, he is also an advisor for SOA’s AIT Committee since mid-2018.

Jenna Fariss, ASA,MAAA

Jenna is Manager and Product Actuary for Milliman IntelliScript. She has 20 years of actuarial consulting experience and is a SaaS development expert. Jenna's current focus is using new technologies in improving underwriting. She is a current member of the Actuarial Innovations and Technology Steering Committee.

Brian Chen

Brian Chen, PhD, MPH, is the Chief Science Officer of FOXO Bioscience (formerly known as Life Epigenetics). He is an epidemiologist by training with expertise in aging, metabolic diseases, genomics, epigenetics, advanced analytics, and biomarker discovery and validation.
