Diversity & Inclusion in Actuarial Employment

Overview

Openness to and acceptance of diverse perspectives, cultures and backgrounds helps to attract the best talent and ensures the overall inclusivity of the actuarial profession. The panelists will discuss how including a group of diverse actuaries and other employees help make a difference in the work environment. 

At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to: 

  • Recruit and develop a diverse workforce 
  • Consider appropriate accommodations for employees to succeed.

Sara Teppema, FSA, MAAA, FCA (Moderator)

Sara Teppema is President of Alta Advisers, where she focuses on quantifying the value of population health programs. Before launching her consulting practice, Sara led the design of innovative and value-based payment models at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. She has over 25 years of health care and actuarial experience, primarily in consulting with a wide variety of clients, including providers, health plans, employers and government entities. She is a member of the Society of Actuaries’ Board of Directors, and she chairs the SOA’s Diversity & Inclusion strategy. She is the past chair of the SOA’s Research Executive Committee, and led a task force as part of the SOA’s Health Section’s strategic initiative for Public Health. She is also on the advisory board of the actuarial program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (her alma mater). When she is not involved in work and volunteer activities, Sara spends time with her husband and three young adult daughters; plays music and sings as much as possible; and regularly hikes and practices yoga.

Craig Kalman, FSA, MAAA

Craig has over 30 years of experience as a healthcare actuary. In 2020, Craig started at GEHA as the Director - Actuarial & Analytic Services. Craig has also worked for t Health Care Service Corporation, UnitedHealthcare, and other insurers, consulting firms, and also as a regulatory actuary. Craig is currently on the SOA Heatlh Section Council, and has also served the SOA in other roles, as well as being actively involved with the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) at both the local and national levels.

Rolande Mbatchou, ASA, MAAA

Rolande Mbatchou is a Managing Actuary at HCSC, where she currently works in the Provider Network Data Science Team. She has actuarial experience working in Reinsurance/Capital Management, Valuation, Medicare Pricing, and building Healthcare Data Analytics Solutions. Rolande is a passionate advocate of Diversity & Inclusion. She has lead multiple initiative as an Actuary at her company to recruit more black actuarial talent. Rolande is the 2020 recipient of HCSC President Diversity & Inclusion Leadership Award. She currently serves on DePaul University Actuarial Board (her alma mater), Morgan State University Actuarial Advisory Board, and is a member of the Leadership Development CAS/SOA Joint Committee for Inclusion, Equity and Diversity (JCIED) workgroup. In her personal life, Rolande loves to spend quality time with her husband and family, and frequently travels around the world to visit her very big family (France, Canada, U.S., Germany, Nigeria, Cameroon, and more). Rolande also enjoys serving in her church as a children/teenager teacher, singing in the choir, and is occasionally invited as a motivational speaker.

Margaret Resce Milkint

Margaret Resce Milkint is a talent strategist and a diversity and inclusion catalyst. As Managing Partner of The Jacobson Group and a member of the firm’s Executive Management Team, Margaret is a key ambassador in establishing strategic client relationships and broadening the firm’s breadth of insurance talent solutions. Her passion lies in counseling clients on leadership selection and she has successfully managed countless executive searches during her more than 30 years with the firm. Margaret’s executive search career spans domestic and global C-suite, executive management and Board of Director roles with depth in the property and casualty, life, health, and reinsurance sectors. She has successfully conducted searches in disciplines such as actuarial, analytics, underwriting, claims, operations, risk, finance, legal, technology, sales and marketing. Margaret is a Trustee and Chair-Elect for The Actuarial Foundation. She is a Board Member for the Museum of Broadcast Communications and for the Executive Sisterhood, an organization promoting female leadership in businesses. Margaret is also a member of the advisory council of InspiraWork™, a custom leadership and organizational development firm. Additionally, she serves as a member of the Society of Actuaries Employers Council and is a member of the Chicago Finance Exchange.

Mary Vollkommer, FSA,MAAA

Mary Vollkommer is a results-oriented leader with over 30 years in Health Insurance. She has a proven record of building and retaining high performance teams and developing employees with critical thinking skills for the next level of leadership. She has created and implemented solutions leveraging multi-functional groups with conflicting priorities. Mary is recently retired and looking to expand her volunteer work in alleviating homelessness.
