Leveraging Social Determinants of Health Analytics to Improve Clinical Performance

As providers take on more and more risk they need to understand their patients more holistically as the majority of healthcare costs are the result of an individual's lifestyle choices, needs and wants. By understanding their patient's lifestyle, environment, needs and wants, through the integration of social determinants of health analytics, providers can work smarter and accelerate their success as they transform to value based care. At the conclusion of this session, attendees will learn: • The data sources used for social determinant of health analytics • Descriptive and predictive analytics use cases to support value based care • How to start using social determinant analytics, and expand the use over time

Kevin E Dotson FSA,MAAA
Kevin E. Dotson is a Director of Actuarial Consulting for Optum in the Provider Risk Advisory practice. He is an actuarial consultant out of the Atlanta office. Kevin has worked in the health care and benefits consulting industry for over 19 years in various actuarial and underwriting endeavors. As part of his work at Optum, he works with provider organizations on their analytics and risk management strategy for various lines of business including commercial, MSSP and Medicare Advantage. He has also served as the lead actuary for commercial payer engagements. Prior to joining Optum he was employed as the Staff Vice President & Actuary for National Accounts Pricing at Anthem. There, he was responsible for the actuarial work for Anthem National Accounts, the Federal Employees Program, Marquee Local Accounts, and Stop Loss. Mr. Dotson has a B.S. statistics degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

Jason Reed is a health actuary and statistician at Optum, specializing in predictive modeling and data mining applications. He has over 10 years of experience applying advanced analytics to improving health insurance risk estimation. He has Master’s Degrees in Statistics and Applied Mathematics from Texas A&M University and currently lives in Boston.
